'The Marquess's Masquerade' is a traditional Regency romance in the style of Georgette Heyer...
Then, he did a terrible thing and smiled at her. That was the moment she knew she was in the biggest trouble of her life…
Miss Constance Lindon is the quiet younger sister of the fashionable Countess of Winbourne. Like any young lady, she can’t wait for her first Season, but not for the usual reasons. At long last, her work is going to be displayed at the Royal Academy Art Exhibition, and for Con, it's the most important thing in the world. She may even make a name for herself as a serious portraitist, if only people would stop talking about the rakish painter Lord Athelcroft long enough to notice her!
The Marquess of Athelcroft has problems of his own - he has to find a quick way to side-step his mother's ceaseless matchmaking before it is too late. Athelcroft has no intention of exchanging the freedom of an accomplished bonvivant for a wife.
When Con unexpectedly loses her place at the exhibition and the dowager marchioness threatens her son with a visit, there’s only one thing left to do strike a deal to fool everyone with a sham engagement. There’s only one rule – no falling in love.
As they embark on a ridiculous plan to make an exhibition of themselves in front of fashionable London, Con and Athelcroft soon discover that love has a way of sneaking up on you when you're not paying attention.
Will matchmaking mamas and well-meaning friends get in the way of a match most scandalous and a love most true?

How wonderful to be able to read the second book of this series and reunite with the wonderful characters of book one. I loved the main character for her complexity, personality, and originality. This author is the very best in modern Regency writing! I found myself smiling throughout this book lead by the intelligence of the author's well-written banter between the main characters. I totally recommend it!Product details

The Marquess Masquerade Dastardly Lords Book 2 edition by Daphne du Bois Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I found this book utterly delightful. I'm pretty picky but this one captured me from the start. I have read all her books and await her next !
This is a heart-warming and touching story. Con and Athelcroft really pull you into their game of love. Their relationship is so full of wonderful dialogue that their characters come to life so vividly. I really enjoyed taking the journey with these two, to see where their relationship would go and how it would unfold. There are even some unexpected twists in the plot that intensify the story more. Very romantic and beautiful!
I haven't read many romance novels and I've never read a traditional Regency romance. (According to Wiki, Regency romances "are a subgenre of romance novels set during the period of the British Regency (1811-1820) or early 19th century. Rather than simply being versions of contemporary romance stories transported to a historical setting, Regency romances are a distinct genre with their own plot and stylistic conventions").
I really enjoyed The Marquess's Masquerade. I instantly fell in love with the fiery Constance, whose nickname is "Con." She's a passionate, talented painter who has no interest in what other ladies are into including fancy dresses and marriage proposals. I also fell in love with The Marquess of Athelcroft because beneath his womanizing ways, he's an absolute sweetheart. Throughout the novel, I was rooting for their relationship to flourish...which it definitely did. I highly recommend!
"Con" is a serious portrait artist about to have her first London showing at the prestigious Royal Acadamy Art Exhibition, a monumental accomplishment for a female in the 19th century. Her excitement is quelled when her space is given to the Marquess of Athelcroft. Upon confronting him and relating her displeasure, he wanted to made a deal. He will return her wall space if she will play his fiance for the Season, in order to placate his mother's constant pressure to marry. She has no plans to participate in the Marriage Mart, which her sister Lorelei insists upon, so she agrees.
As with her first book of the Dastardly Lords series, I found the characters and storyline believable. Our rogue, Athelcroft, is humorous and playful, which only adds to his charm, and he is socially fearless. Without either knowing or wanting they, rather quickly, fall in love- we know before they do.
Their mutual love of painting alots them much time together and they do a collaborative project for the upcoming show. But, as the saying goes, the best layed plans...well, they sometimes go terribly awry, thanks to miscommunication and interference of others.
But issues can be resolved because, in this novel, our heroine does not swoon and her knees do not give out on her. She has finally learned to not settle for anything less than what she wants and deserves. She makes the plans for her life clear-but there is still room for love. Enjoy-II did!.
